Afterglow · Last updated August 7, 2026
Afterglow is built to work with as little data collection as possible. There are no accounts and no login — this policy explains the few places data does move.
Everything you write — entries, mood tags, dates — is stored locally on your device using Apple/Android's standard on-device storage. We do not operate a server that stores your journal, and your entries are never uploaded anywhere unless you explicitly request an AI reflection (below) or use the built-in export/share feature yourself.
When you tap "Get Reflection" on an entry, that entry's text and mood are sent to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API solely to generate your reflection and returns the result to your device. We do not retain a copy of your entry text on our server after the request completes. Anthropic's handling of API requests is governed by their own policies: Anthropic Privacy Policy, Anthropic Commercial Terms.
AI reflections are generated for personal insight and are not a substitute for professional mental health advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you're in crisis, please contact a mental health professional or local emergency services.
If you tap "Get Weekly Insight," a capped batch of your recent entries (up to 40, from the last 30 days) is sent the same way — to our server, then to Anthropic's Claude API, solely to generate a short pattern summary. We do not retain a copy of any entry text on our server after the request completes, and nothing from this batch is stored anywhere beyond the single request.
Afterglow's optional subscription is purchased and billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play — we never see or store your payment details. To verify your subscription status, we use RevenueCat, which identifies your device with a randomly generated anonymous ID (not your name, email, or journal content). See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
If you turn on a daily journaling reminder, the time you choose is stored locally on your device and used to schedule a local notification. It is never sent to us.
You can export or permanently delete all of your journal data at any time from Settings. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data from your device (though it may persist in your own device backups, e.g. iCloud, outside of our control).
Afterglow is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
